Economic Development
Rep. Veasey was the House sponsor of SB 1618, a bill designed to increase economic opportunities for Small and Minority/Women Owned Business in the Metroplex by making contracting opportunities more accessible at DFW Airport. This Bill will allow DFW to use "best practices" in selecting firms to do business at the airport and will give them more opportunities to use small and women / minority owned businesses. The passage of this bill will level the playing field for many small business owners. Rep. Veasey is always supportive of legislation that is aimed at giving hard working entrepreneurs in his district the chance to succeed in our economy.
Education
Rep. Veasey has helped lead the fight to raise teacher pay to the national average and to help teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and other school employees with the rising cost of health insurance. Veasey voted to provide our children with the up-to date textbooks they need to be successful. He led the fight against school vouchers to keep our public schools receiving much needed resources. In addition, in 2007 he passed legislation that increased TRS benefits to retired teachers by granting a "13th Check", to assist with cost of living increases.
Rep. Veasey authored and helped pass HB 2504, an education bill that will provide for students struggling with mathematics and algebra. HB 2504 creates a pilot program administered by the Commissioner of Education wherein schools can establish incentive support programs for these students struggling with math. These programs will give students access to better tutoring and support as well as the technological tools to help them improve their mastery of math and algebra. As Texas's economy becomes even more technologically oriented, math and algebra skills will become essential to finding a lucrative career. HB 2504 will help prepare our school children for a better future.
Public Safety
Rep. Veasey sponsored the House passage of SB 1238, a bill that bans the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the vicinity of homeless shelters and substance abuse rehabilitation clinics. Many residents in these facilities already suffer from some form of alcohol or drug addiction, and the consumption of such beverages have too often lead to dangerous or criminal situations. This law will improve public safety while aiding the homeless and those with substance addictions as they seek to reestablish their path in life.
Public Health
In the area of Health, Veasey has authored legislation aimed at decreasing fetal and infant mortality(HB 420), as well as legislation aimed at educating the public on adult diabetes(HB 2614 & HB 2615), with curriculum available in both english and spanish. He as also worked in the legislature to make information on medicare providers more readily available to the public(HB 2042).
As the issues of healthcare and economic concerns continue to grow in importance to the majority of Americans, Representative Veasey will continue to be an ardent proponent of those issues most important to his constituents.
